Highlight:

FC Bayern Munich hammer Manchester United 4-3 on Wednesday night in their UEFA Champions League Opener.

What Happened:

Leroy Sané scored the first goal of the match as his shot eluded Andre Onana’s grip to make the breakthrough and few minutes later Serge Gnabry scored another to hand Bayern a two-goal lead before the half-time.

In spite of Rasmus Hojlund pulling one back for the Reds, any hopes for United coming back into the game was extinguished when the referee, Glenn Nyberg whistled for a potential handball by United midfielder, Christian Erikson and Harry Kane stepped up to help convert a penalty for the Bavarians.

Casemiro went on to bag a brace in the panic-stricken closing stages but that decision was even harder to take as Mathys Tel’s goal gave Bayern three critical points in the opening game of Group A.

What they said:

Thomas Tuchel (Bayern Munich Head coach): "At the end of the day, it's a deserved win. Each victory in the Champions League is a moment. It’s a key for our self-reliance and growth, yet there are things we need to build on. We made a very cautious start. The goals we scored aided us to find our drift and our reliance levels grew. It's a bit conflicting. I belief we engaged a lot better in the second half compared to the first, still we strayed the second and won the first. The response to the goals we conceded was very good and crucial.”

Leroy Sané (Bayern Munich Forward): "We're delighted to have secured our first Champions League game of the season and accumulated the three points. It was a fairly ferocious game. We were superior in our attacks, but have to break off making so many errors. There was just too much of that. It was certainly a performance for the fans, but we needed to soothe the game down and do greater on the counter-attack. We were 2-0 up. That's when we have to take charge of the game, especially when we secure back the ball; then we have to find the right man."

Konrad Laimer (Bayern Munich Midfielder): "It was a rough game. There were points when we could have dominated the game better. We had chances to be victorious, but we let the opposition back into it. The main thing is starting with three points. We know we can and have to be one step ahead. If we win in the end, it's good."

Victor Lindelöf (Manchester United defender): "We started the game well. Mistakes are part of the game. It's definitely not the result we wanted. We tried the whole lot and scored three goals, but it wasn't sufficient. Bayern are a good side with good squad.”

Erik ten Hag (Manchester United head coach): "We're clearly disheartened. When you score three goals in Munich, you have to come away with something - but we didn't do that. We were the better team in the first 25 minutes, but then conceded two silly goals."

Revealing at his post-match press conference at the Allianz Arena, Erik coveyed the same situation, backing his goalkeeper and declaring that he has the key traits to quickly move on.

“In football on the whole, there will always be errors and this is one of the mistakes, so we shouldn’t make it bigger than it is.”

“This was not just Onana, after that he made great saves for us in the second half and he showed his potentials and skills. He will bounce back, and he is a key player.”

“The fact Onana looked out to the media after the match was certainly to his merit.”

''It is good that he did that but it is about the squad as a whole,” Ten Hag repeated. "Always mistakes are being made, but you have to bounce back as a team. When you score three goals as red devil once again, and one player makes such an error, it is done.

"That is what we, as a team, we have to believe that we always can bounce back. Tonight we conveyed it, that you keep fighting and never stop being consistent even after making mistakes." Said the Dutchman.

André Onana (Manchester United Goalkeeper): Nevertheless, Onana fronted up to TNT Sports after the match and spoke to the broadcaster about the seven-goal skirmish at the Allianz Arena.

"It's hard to lose this way because I feel in the onset, we started very good. After my errors, we lost the control of the game. You know, it's a tough situation and for me particularly because I'm the one who let my side down. But the team was very good, I think it's because of me that we didn’t end up victorious in this game.

"So I'm glad for the efforts from my team. We just have to move on. This is being a goalkeeper and we were not victorious today because of me."
